Because of taking everything apart to get at them, I'll probably put new rotors on if they are marginal. I need to consider repacking or replacing my bearings on my 93 190 (210,000 miles) this summer. A good mechanic with a hammer and a drift still needs to have a surgeons touch! Many times you can actually use the old race that you knocked out as a tool to put on top of the new race to eliminate damage to the new race when you start tapping it in.īeing a mechanic for 35+ years, my chisel, drift and punch drawer is fairly large. And you must go slower tapping the new race in as to not damage the actual race bearing surface. You can feel and hear when a race is fully seated. I knock races out with a hammer and a drift, and tap the new ones in carefully UNTILL there fully seated. If you think one component of the wheel bearings or races is damaged, then I'd replace everything at one time. Pack the bearings with high-temp grease thoroughly and insert into the races.Ĩ.Ědd the sealer ring to the inner bearing.īoltsěrake caliper boltsěrake disc retaining bolts Road wheel boltsĬlick to expand. If the wheel bearings and races look OK and are not damaged, then clean everything up spotless and regrease and repack the bearings. Insert new outer races of both inner and outer bearings.Ħ.Ĝlean the center hole thoroughly after both outer races are in place.ħ. Pre-cool the races in freezer, and pre-heat the hub body up to 400Â☏ for easy installation.ĥ. Remove the outer races of both inner and outer bearings.ģ.Ĝlean the hub thoroughly, clean center mating surface with brake cleaner.Ĥ. Remove old outer races and insert new ones:Ģ. Pull the hub assembly away from the steering knuckle. Unscrew the hub nut with adjustable wrench ġ0. Slacken the clamping screw with a 5mm hexagon socket.Ĩ. Remove contact spring for radio interference suppression.ħ. (wire brush the caliper outer covering, rag cleaning the surface with pre-all solution let it dry, brush on a thin coat of rust encapsulator.Ĥ.Ĝlean the caliper bolt holes threads in the hub using an old bolt with a slot cut in its threads.ĥ.Ĝlean the removed bolts, apply Thread Locker Blue to end section so they can be reused.Ħ. Remove brake assembly, and hang it on suspension spring with wire. Procedure for front wheel bearings replacement and related jobsĢ. Now here's my step-by-step procedure for the job to share with anyone who need to do the same job: I have never driven at such speed since I got the car in 2003, because the uncomfortable vibration it delivered at close to 80mph. I tightened them up as specification, and took a high-speed test at 95 mph on the #95 interstate, it was really a smooth ride. Yesteday, I checked the wheel play, it was way to large, on both front wheels. I notice the steering wheel shaked at speed nearing 80 mph. ![]() In contrary, the outer race of inner bearing sit in easily, even somehow loosely.Īfter the job. The tough part is hammering in the outer race of outer bearing into the hub, even with the race in freezer, and hub in oven at 400F, I couldn't put it in easily without using hammer and woodblock, and it also turned out that it didn't sit inplace until I have driven it for a few days. The inner bearing was still ok except the seal broken. it took us about an hour with chizel, saw, hammer, until my friend came with a pipe wrench, with long handle. Also, I wrote down a step by step procedure before I started, which is attached at the end.Īs expected, the 15-mile drive created enough heat to expand the inner race of outer bearing, which then got pushed inwards, when it cooled down, it gripped the axle. Replace front wheel bearings - Now report back.įinally I got it fixed with help from a friend. ![]() You will see what I mean, once you put the bearing back in. And if that has actually happened then we're in trouble.īut lets hope the bearing will come rite off.ģ) You will now see a clamp that goes around the axle (sort of like a axle on other imports)Ĥ) It has a hex screw on it, easiest way to remove it is use the proper hex bit, mounted in to a socket and then use a wrentch to losen the hex screw.ĥ) Once the screw is losened, you can use a open-ended wrentch to take the clamp off, most likely you will be able to use you fingers to get it off.Ħ) Now if you havnt damaged the bearing housing and fused it to the axle itself, it will push itself out as you take the clamp off.ħ) Regrease new bearing, reverse the removal process.Ĩ)Note, you do not tighten the clamp nut all the way, just enough so that the rotor can spin without much effort, and is straight. That could have fused the bearing housing to the axle. The only thing I worry about is that you drove it 15 miles with the bearings shot.
